Standing returns to English top flight stadiums
The first official trial of safe standing in English football stadiums has now commenced.
Home and visiting supporters at Stamford Bridge for the Chelsea v Liverpool Premier League match on January 2nd, were able to stand in designated areas for the first time.
Five clubs - Cardiff City, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotpsur, are the first clubs in the top two tiers of English football to have licensed safe standing in designated rail-seating areas.
The areas have been installed for both home and away fans.
The Government's Sports Ground Safety Authority, has spent 18 months gathering evidence on standing areas and concluded standing is no less safe than seating where areas are properly managed.
If the current trials prove successful, it is expected the legislation will be expanded to cover all stadiums in England's top two divisions.

Work begins on Anfield Road extension
Construction work at Liverpool FC on the Anfield Road stand extension is now well underway.
An additional 7,000 seats will be installed, bringing the overall capacity of the Anfield stadium to 61,000, the third largest in England.
The work is expected to be completed for the start of the 2023/24 season.

York finally move into new stadium
After years of delays, York City have finally moved into their new stadium at Monks Cross.
The first match at the stadium was v AFC Fylde on 16/02/2021.
The 8,500 capacity stadium replaces the iconic Bootham Crescent, and will be shared with the York City Knights Rugby League club.

Foxes expansion moves closer
Permission has been granted for Leicester City to begin work on the Walkers Stadium expansion.
The plans will see an additional 8,000 seats and new roof installed in the East Stand.
The project also includes a hotel, indoor arena, multi-storey car park, and residential apartments.

Plans for new Royale Union home
Currently sitting at the top of the Belgian First Division, Brussels club Royale Union SG are planning a move to a new stadium.
A location in Parc du Bempt in the Forest Municipality, has been identified for a new 21,100 stadium replacing the iconic Stade Joseph Marien, the club's home for over 100 years.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Oxford United
League One Oxford United, currently chasing a play-off place in the division, are planning to relocate to a new stadium.
Despite only playing at their current Kassam Stadium since 2001, a venue they lease until 2026, the U's have identified a site in the north of the city close to the A34 for a new 18,000 capacity ground.

Barcelona
Catalan giants Barcelona have signed a new sponsorship deal with Spotify, which includes the renaming of their iconic stadium to
Spotify Nou Camp.
It is the first time in the club's history that the stadium will include a sponsor's name in the title.

Stoke City
25 years since its opening, the bet 365 stadium is to undergo a major upgrade to its facilities.
A £4m investment will see additional seats installed in the West stand, upgraded concourses and toilets, and improvements to the boardroom, players, and corporate lounges.

FAMOUS LOST FOOTBALL PUBS
The Globe Nottingham

Detached pub on London Road in Nottingham, on the walk between
the railway station, Meadow Lane, and the City Ground.
Always popular on match days with supporters of both Nottingham clubs, the pub was certainly a 'home fans only' establishment when
Forest were playing at home.
Famed for its range of cask ales, the upstairs function room at the Globe was a regular meeting place for the Nottingham branch of Camra.
Converted to an Indian restaurant for a while, the building has now been demolished.
